What is Family and Children Development?

Family and Children Development focuses on fostering Family Development through advocacy of the Safe Family Policy and the Penang Childcare Policy. It is an initiative dedicated to building a harmonious society by emphasising the importance of family values and interactions.

The Safe Family Policy is a cornerstone of Family and Children Development, focusing on creating a secure, nurturing, and supportive environment for families. It advocates for the protection of family units and the well-being of children by promoting policies that address key social challenges and enhance familial harmony.

  • Recognising the diverse structures and dynamics of modern families and supporting them equitably.

Family Development

Family Development aims to raise awareness about the significance of family values and interactions, contributing to a more harmonious society. This initiative is aligned with the Penang2030 vision of “A Family-Focused Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation.”
Launched in 2019, the Family Development programme integrates family values into policies, public sector practices, and programs to promote healthy family interactions and active participation.

Objectives of Family Development

  • Incorporate family perspectives into policies, programs, and practices across public sectors.
  • Design and deliver initiatives that foster family values through smart partnerships.
  • Establish systems for monitoring, evaluation, and the implementation of programmes and policies.

Family Initiatives

Family Day

In partnership with the Penang State Government, the inaugural State-Level Family Day in 2019 was themed “Celebrating Families.” This event highlighted the importance of the family unit as the foundation of society. It also provided a platform for family members to engage in fun and meaningful activities, fostering stronger bonds.

Childcare Initiatives

Taska and Pusat Jagaan Kanak-Kanak (PJKK)

As part of the Penang State Government’s efforts to support working parents, childcare facilities like Taska D’ KOMTAR and PJKK centre in Timur Laut were established. These facilities offer affordable and accessible childcare services, aligning with the Penang Childcare Policy & Action Plan, implemented in March 2013.

Childcare@Workplace: A Business Imperative?

Collaborating with the Penang State Government, TalentCorp, and JCI Pearl, this dialogue emphasises the importance of work-life balance practices. Industry leaders from the manufacturing sector, service industry, NGOs, and government agencies have participated in discussions about overcoming barriers to establishing workplace childcare facilities. Solutions and best practices were shared to inspire organisations to support working parents effectively.
